Editor’s Letter: For the joy of public art

Lego Jesse

Choosing themes for each issue has given us some opportunities for what we will feature in each issue of the magazine, but what we have discovered is that there are so many stories to tell in every topic we have chosen.

This month, as I travelled across the region delivering magazines with a keen eye looking for public art, I felt overwhelmed by the amount that we have in the Peace Region, from sculptures by world-class artists, murals by professionals to enthusiasts, to painted flower pots and utility boxes.

Public art not only beautifies our community, but it helps tell our story. In Beaverlodge, murals have popped up all around the town celebrating its history from early settlers to the prehistoric times.

Alisa Parenteau painted a striking mural in Fort St. John last year that reminded us of not only the indigenous history of the area but the relationship made with settlers.

One day while out taking photos I noticed that the Swan sculpture from Jubilee Park was gone. A search on social media said it was removed due to vandalism, but we would quickly learn that it is being restored and prepared for a new home. Writer Susan Thompson discovered that the Swan carries a unique and special history in the Swan City of Grande Prairie. Theft, vandals, and mystery are all included in her story.

Public art is simply what truly helps beautify our community and remember our history.

There are so many stories to tell about the public art of the Peace Region and I hope we get to address it again in the future.

The Future

Speaking of the future, I want to sincerely thank all of our advertisers and subscribers to the magazine. Thank you. It is because of you that we can continue creating this locally produced magazine.

If you haven’t subscribed yet and have the means to do so, please consider subscribing to our print magazine highlighting the arts and culture scene in the Peace Region (we’ve also been told an Article subscription makes an excellent gift).

If your business is looking to advertise, marketing directly to people who live in the Peace Region, look no further than advertising locally.

Yes, we pay locals to help produce this magazine and, with the help of subscribers and advertisers, want to continue paying more creatives and local writers.

Thank you for your support!
