Well, it’s summertime, and one genre has become synonymous with the season: action movies.
There are many excellent entries from around the world, and, alongside them, a variety of sub-genres, whether to broaden your view of the genre or give it a second chance.
Action-comedy
The Action-comedy is an interesting entry, given that the action is two-toned: that’s where the laughs and thrills are as well. Films such as Police Story, Kung Fu Hustle, The Last Action Hero, Hundreds of Beavers, and Lethal Weapon.
Martial Arts
Martial arts are often overlooked as a subgenre of action.
Martial arts movies are often a great time, with ridiculous plots, fun choreography, and, at times, stunning sets. Movies like The Deadly Venoms, Enter the Dragon, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, The Raid, and Ip Man.
Action Adventure
If you are longing for fun, then action-adventure is the way to go, offering a spectacle on all fronts, with the thrill of exploring new worlds and places paired with the danger of colourful casts of villains and monsters to overcome.
This is also a favourite among many franchises, including Raiders of the Lost Ark, GoldenEye, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Mummy, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.
Arthouse Action
Although not commonly considered a subgenre, arthouse action is more about action movies for people seeking more substance in the artistic sense.
Films like Seven Samurai, The Grand Master, Run Lola Run, Hero, and Everything Everywhere All At Once are among a few that would be placed in this category.
