My body of work explores the hidden mechanics of memory, time, spirit, and the inner workings of the visionary mind through an intricate examination of highly complex abstract collages that merge graphic, geometric, and rhythmic elements.
The work is intended for open-ended interpretations by the viewer; the raw juxtaposition of order and chaos in each piece can be meditated on and internalized for a personal experience.
Each of these surreal works of the inner mind has its own abstract universe of logic. Everything begins with a strict set of minimalist guidelines that I adhere to while working.
I investigate abstract laws visually through geometric
abstraction. Procedures, ideas, and rhythms form and grow from my initial conditions, one mark at a time, until half-automatic drawing techniques navigate and guide the process.
Through intense exploration and the repetition of patterns, I utilize each piece as a basis for exploring the duality of my conscious and subconscious mind. This process can seem like a meditative, trance-like state to an outsider.
About the Artist
Stephen Ferris currently resides in Treaty 7 territory in Calgary, but began his creative path at age 27 in Fort St. John, B.C., where he grew up.
There, he developed his “unfiltered, naïve visions through a minimalist approach that expands exponentially,” while being self-taught.
Ferris investigates rhythmic abstractions of unfinished geometric shapes, patterns, and forms with discordant figure-ground relationships. From a distance, chaos and order form a captivating macrocosm; up close, minute details emerge.
He has exhibited extensively across North America, including the Baton Rouge Gallery–Center for Contemporary Art, MIRUS Gallery in San Francisco, Denver, and Los Angeles, and a solo exhibition at Harcourt House in Edmonton.
