Goodfare painter recognized

Oranges 16×12 watercolour by Mimi Zhang-Mackie

Watercolour artist Mimi Zhang-Mackie was selected as a finalist for the Northwest Watercolour Society’s 2026 Waterworks Exhibition for her painting, Oranges.

Zhang-Mackie was among 500 applicants, and her painting was among 75 selected for the exhibition.

Oranges is inspired by the simple act of peeling a mandarin. This piece captures the

ephemeral beauty of life’s small sweet moments, an exploration of contentment found in

ordinary things,” said Zhang-Mackie.

An award reception will be held on June 13, where Zhang-Mackie could win up to $1,000 in cash. The exhibition will be available for online viewing at nwws.org on May 1.

Grande Prairie artist Christina Wallwork’s painting Rooted in Balance has been acquired by the Royal Alberta Museum for its Indigenous Collection.

The painting was previously featured in the 2025 National Gathering of Elders in Edmonton.

“Having my work included in the Royal Alberta Museum collection is something I never imagined, and it has been an exciting and meaningful experience to be part of,” said Wallwork.

She said it was an honour to have her painting be part of the gathering, and noted it was also a significant milestone for the organizer, Explore Edmonton.

Explore Edmonton’s approach prioritizes Indigenous voices and reinforces their role as a collaborative partner supporting long-term growth in Indigenous tourism,” she said.

“It was meaningful to me to uplift Indigenous voices, be connected to and support Indigenous artists, and help share stories respectfully and collaboratively.”

Rooted in Balance depicts “the balance of spirit, body, mind, and community that lies at the heart of holistic health and wellness,” said Wallwork.

“The women are rooted in the medicines of the land, grounded in the strength of the Earth, and nourished by ancestral teachings.

“Their connection is carried through prayer, ceremony, and tradition, honouring the wisdom that sustains well-being across generations.”
