New Stamp Collection Celebrates Musical Talent

Canada Post released three new commemorative stamps paying tribute to Canadian hip-hop pioneers Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee and Muzion. The stamps were unveiled in February in Toronto to celebrate Black History Month.

In Canada, the hip-hop scene began to take shape in the 1980s with many artists generally coming out of major urban centres such as Toronto, Montréal and Halifax. In its early days, Canadian hip-hop received little to no commercial radio play. Instead, it was supported by local promoters, on college and community radio and later through MuchMusic and MusiquePlus.

Each of these MCs pioneered a uniquely Canadian identity, with a sound influenced largely by musical styles and rhythms from Jamaica, Trinidad and Haiti.
