Angry Outdoor Kids bring new hip-hop beats locally

If you ask the Angry Outdoor Kids where they got their name, they will tell you it started over ten years ago with a graffiti tag.

They are now preparing to release their third album in 2026, featuring 10 new tracks.

Blending elements of live music layered with pre-produced beats, the AOK are known for their high-energy live shows, crafting their own OG 90s-inspired hip-hop beats while rounding out the sound with some tasty live overdubs by Jordy Sherback on guitar and Alexander St. James on bass.

To this solid foundation, three MCs create the flow: Riley Rieves Forsberg a.k.a Riev, Levi Kirkham a.k.a Grandmaster Le, and Darby Laliberte a.k.a. Que.

Their creative lyrics pay homage to both the sweetness and the stings of life with recurring references to bees and honey.

They have even coined their own term, “Dunny,” which is a reference to someone who is like family or someone who has been with you since “Day one” or the beginning.

AOK garnered attention with their first album, GP Zoo in 2021, featuring standout tracks such as Background Muzik as well as the title track.

They gained a following of fans who have been known to use the angry face emoji icon to support them on social media.

In 2023, they released their second album, The Dunnage. Highlights from it include singles such as Is You With It?, Tiny Things and Midas. The song Midas features guest vocals by Jenna Brace, who helps front local band Goodbye Iris.

Since their beginnings in 2016, AOK have played numerous events, including Wubs in the Woods, The Big Chill Festival, Electric Paradox 1.0 & 2.0, Northern Rhythm Music and Arts Festival, and the Bluesky Music Festival.  They opened for Canadian legend K-OS at the Lion’s Den in 2024.

In January, AOK were named the 2025 Platinum winner for Best Local Band in the Grande Prairie Community Votes Awards.

Check them out wherever you get your music.
